Oceanic Teleconnections are Linked to U.S. Great Plains Droughts

Hi, today I read an article on U.S. droughts and the billions of dollars lost as a result of them. However, Scientists may be have found the lead cause in the droughts, teleconnections: a "spatially and temporally large-scale anomaly that influences the variability of the atmospheric circulation". In other words, a long distant relationship between weather patterns.

Main Points:

  • The main teleconnections :
    • El Niño/Nina Southern Oscillation (ENSO)
    • Pacific Decadel Oscillation (PDO)
    • Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO)
  • Effect:
    • Fluctuations in Sea Surface Temperatures (SSTs)
    • Cold and dry air replaces warm and moist air
  • Scientists found that ENSO is linked with the U.S. seasonal mean temperatures and precipitation
    • That during ENSO: when sea temperatures are cooler than average, leads to drier conditions
