Design, use, and functionality of a Bioreactor

Published on 1 December 2024 at 14:07

This month I will be researching bioreactors, a device or system designed to support and control biological processes by providing a controlled environment with specific conditions. The article, Design and Construction of a Low-Cost compressive Loading and Perfusion Flow Bioreactor, highlights the bioreactor's functionality, design, flow system, and data acquisition.

Here is what I learned

  • The bioreactor integrates perfusion flow and dynamic compressive loading to enhance cell culture and mechanical stimulation in 3D porous scaffolds

  • The loading frame supports up to three chambers, fits standard CO2 incubators, and is constructed from commonly available bioinert, autoclavable materials for easy adaptation to user-specific applications.

  • Media perfusion is achieved using a peristaltic pump and silicone tubing, enabling continuous nutrient transport, waste removal, and uniform cell seeding, with through-sample perfusion for enhanced shear stress distribution and nutrient delivery.

Thank you for tuning in and I'll see you next month!
