This month I will be reviewing the LA fires, devastating wildfires that have killed 25 people, displaced 100,000, and caused tens of billions of dollars in damages. Looking at the BU article How and Why the LA Wildfires Grew So Fast—and Lessons for the Future, I will be briefly covering the LA fires summarizing the main details about the event.

Here are some of the main details from the article:
- The fires are spreading rapidly because of the strong, dry Santa Ana winds; extreme dryness because of the minimal rainfall to the LA area; and past flooding, which has led to plant growth, further fueling the fires
- These fires are special in that they occur at certain times owing to Santa Ana winds, and they are fed not just by vegetation but also by urban centers
- Climate change exacerbates fire conditions but is not the sole cause
- Massive infrastructure and vegetation destruction leading to mass losses by insurances
Thank you for tuning in this month, and come back next month for another update!
