How Does La Niña Affect Winters in the US This Year?

Published on 26 October 2025 at 10:02

Today I plan to talk about La Niña and how the switch from El Niño to La Niña this upcoming winter is going to affect the US. The weather phases, El Niño and La Niña, are warm and cool phases of climate across the tropical Pacific Ocean that can affect weather worldwide. During La Niña, the Northern part of the US experiences wetter and colder climates, while the Southern part of the US experiences warmer and dryer winter months. Below is a picture of the temperature outlook for this upcoming 2025-2026 winter.

Here are the notes I took about an article I read about this year's winter cycle:

  • La Niña conditions are expected through winter 2025–26, likely weakening to neutral by early spring.

  • It should be a weak, short La Niña, bringing cooler, wetter weather to the Northern Plains.

  • Warm winter likely across the southern U.S. and East Coast; colder from the Pacific Northwest to the Great Lakes.

  • Wetter-than-average conditions expected in the Northern Plains, Great Lakes, and Northwest; drier across the southern U.S.

  • Drought to persist in the Southwest and Deep South but improve in the Northwest; none expected in central SD or west-central MN.

  • For eastern SD and west-central MN, winter is likely colder and slightly wetter than normal, with 30–50 inches of typical snowfall.
